THESE NOTES WERE KEPT IN A SMALL NOTEBOOK 2" X 3" WHICH DAD KEPT IN HIS POCKET.  THEY COVER THE TIME FROM NOVEMBER 12, 1943 (HE TOOK HIS PHYSICAL)  UNTIL  THE PATTERSON ARRIVED IN NEW YORK CITY OCTOBER 11, 1945.

22 Feb 1945     Went into Iwo Jima to transfer survivors

22 Feb – 11 Mar Nothing but patrol. Went into Iwo several times for mail

11 Mar              Left for Ulithi

14 Mar              Arrived Ulithi

21 Mar              Left Ulithi for Okinawa and islands just south of Japan. Task Force 54 Largest Task                              Force ever assembled . Air attacks. Lots of floating mines sunk.

1 April              Went to Kerama Retto for bombs for planes.

2 April              Received commendation from Task Force Commander for battle. Now heros.

13 April          Heard news of President’s death about 10:30 am. 1300 colors lowered to half mast- to be                             at half mast for 30 days.

14 April          Five minutes silence oberserved at 1400

22 April         Went to Kerama Retto for supplies. Left same day.

28 April         Hospital ship U.S.S. Comfort hit by two Jap bombs about 10pm several miles away. We                            started out to help in answer to SOS but received word they were ok.

29 April         Left area for Guam.

2 May              Arrived Guam.

6 May              Recreation on Guam. Saw a woman for first time in about a year.

1 Jun                SKD-2C

4 Jun                Left to escort New Mexico to Leyte.

7 Jun                Arrived Leyte

8 Jun                Left Leyte to escort LST’s to Okinawa.

12 Jun              Arrived Kerama Retto and Okinawa then rejoined Task Group

23 Jun              Left for Leyte – mission complete—well done

27 Jun              Arrived at Leyte

2 Jul                  Left for Saipan

5 Jul                  Arrived Saipan

7 Jul                  Left Saipan for sub patrol duty

14 Jul                Left sub patrol duty for Saipan

15 Jul                Arrived Saipan. Rescue ship for B29’s

19 Jul                Convoyed troop transport to Guam

22 Jul                 Returned to Saipan

1 Aug                 Left Saipan in convoy for Okinawa

7 Aug                 Arrived Okinawa Several air attacks.

8 Aug                 Left with convoy for Saipan

10 Aug              At 2000 or 10pm Capt. Read a radio message intercepted by our radiomen from                              Japan  to Sweden accepting peace terms. I had the 8 to 12 watch. The time back                              home would be 7am 8/10/45.

14 Aug              Arrived Saipan at noon.

15 Aug              9am heard news of Jap surrender.

16 Aug              7pm Left Saipan for Guam

17 Aug             Left Guam to convoy New Jersey with Admiral Spruance to Manila. New Jersey                              and Patterson only ships.

20 Aug             Started through San Bernardino Straits at dawn. Arrived at Manila at midnight.                              Cruised   around until dawn.

21 Aug              Entered Manila Bay at dawn. Refueled and anchored

22 Aug              Visited John at Manila Hotel. Buildings in Manila really torn up.

27 Aug             10 am Received orders to escort New Jersey to Okinawa and proceed to Pearl                              Harbor then to West Coast for general overhaul.

28 Aug              11am Left Manila with New Jersey for Okinawa.

30 Aug              Arrived Okinawa.

2 Sep                At anchor in Buckner Bay, Okinawa. Heard radio reports of actual signing of                              peace terms at 10:30. Also heard orders by President Truman,General MacArthur,                              and Admiral Nimitz.

7 Sep                 Got underway with USS Boyd for States at 3:30pm. Rah Rah Rah. 18 months.                              Homeward Bound Pendant really flying. Reached from mast to fan tail. Passed                              Mississippi on way out.

10 Sep              Reached Saipan about 6 pm. Boyd went on to Eniwetok.

11 Sep              Got underway about 11am for Eniwetok

14 Sep              Arrived Eniwetok about 10am. Refueled and left for Pearl Harbor about noon.

19 Sep              Arrived Pearl Harbor about 2pm. Recreation at DesPac base.

20 Sep              Took on over 100 more passengers making 156 in all. Left for San Diego at 6pm.

26 Sep              11:01 am Tied up at pier in San Diego. Liberty in San Diego. 18 mo. 18 days since                             leaving States.

27 Sep              9:35 am Left San Diego for Panama Canal

29 Sep              Ran into tropical storm in the night. Lasted 9-30 to 10-1.

5 Oct                 Went through Panama Canal. Took all day. Tied up at Coco Solo for night.

6 Oct                 Left at noon for New York

8 Oct                 Passed within sight of Cuba

11 Oct              Arrived New York 35th Street Landing
